Coiled Spring

Starlings over the pier

If yesterday is anything to go by spring is ready, coiled, just beneath the surface, standing by to burst out into all it’s glory. Just as long as this milder weather holds out.

It was a glorious day yesterday. We went on one of my favourite long walks over Tanybwlch beach and up the steep cliffs at the end.
Once we’d recovered our breath from the climb it was fabulous; crisp air fragranced by grass and stunning views down the coast. Rolling farmland to our left and tumbling cliffs to our right, where we watched foxes playing for a good 10 minutes.

As the sun started to get lower in the sky (it was about 3.45pm) we left the cliff path by cutting across fields, scaring up flocks bickering starlings preparing to fly to roost in Aberystwyth.

The sun was golden, bathing the stunning panorama of the mountains with a tinge of pink as we strolled down lanes listening to nothing except the song of birds and the calm call of sheep.

As we reached the valley floor spring was even more tangible as we found a bed of snowdrops and daffodils, and could hear lambs calling from a nearby field.
I always want this time of day to freeze and stay as it is; to live in a place where I can experience the silence and peace that it inevitably brings – and not be caught up in the hustle and bustle of the town.

We finally reached Aberystwyth as the sun was setting. This change in weather had brought people out and fires were being prepared on the beach as the starlings gathered from the fields to roost under the pier. I really hope the weather stays milder as I cannot wait for spring to arrive properly!
