Don’t talk to me about eco-buttons…

15 Jan

…has become a standard phrase in our house. It’s official – I hate eco-gadgets. The office has been fraught this week, we’ve had tears and bad tempers and most of it has been because of these little gadgets that are meant to make our lives easier.

First of all we have the humble eco-button. It sits benignly on your desk, lulling you with its gentle green flashing light…until that is you try and install in on the server computer. Then it will go haywire, sending the computer in to an infinite restarting loop making all office workers go into a panic as the files and emails of 15 staff disappear into cyberspace.

Then we have the intelligent switch. Turns off all your machinery on standby…good! Breaks the photocopier…hmm maybe that’s good too considering it didn’t really work anyway! It also made the internet go a bit mad after the boxes were turned off over night, which didn’t really do much to calm already frayed tempers, but after a bit of shifting around of plugs I think it’s working now.

And then…the worst. I have had to deal with people making ‘funny’ comments about them all week. I just felt like chucking it all out the window the other day. People complain about our energy bills but when someone actually tries to deal with it they like to make smart comments about it just because it’s eco-friendly. RAR.

I’m sorry – this post is a total rant and you don’t really want to read this. It’s just that this week has been the worst I have ever experienced in this office.  Even though it wasn’t my fault that the hardware fried or that people haven’t got used to them yet, it still feels like it is. I feel like people are annoyed with the changes I have tried to make because it’s making their lives harder.

But when has eco-living been easy anyway? I don’t really know why I was expecting it to be. It’s hard enough to keep motivated when you care about it, let alone when you’ve been pushed into it kicking and screaming by your office administrator.

But there we are, they want to save money and electricity and no –one else is doing much about it, so they can just suck it up, get on with it and push that little green button.

I think its good what you’re doing, although it may be difficult getting used to it. I’m sure someone said electricity would never catch on, and it did, so ignore those people who mutter about it.
