The un-cooperative mousse

I had a bit of a cooking disaster the other day while preparing Sunday lunch. We had a joint of beef to serve to our friends at 1.45pm so I was up early to put the meat in and prepare the rest of the meal before I left for church at 11am.

I started off with making the dessert which according to Nigella is simple and easy and perfect for dinner parties.

It was a quick chocolate mousse that apparently doesn’t need to set in the fridge. So I went about my business following her recipe, but as soon as I put the chocolate into the cream I knew I was in trouble. It just turned to chocolate slop, and my insides turned to mush. My pudding! Eeeeeek!



So I just shoved it in the fridge and ran around the kitchen in a panic for a couple of minutes and then decided just to ignore it and see what happened.  After 40 minutes it hadn’t done anything and Nigella had said that it didn’t need to set in the first place (because it doesn’t use eggs etc. like normal mousse) so I gave up hope and decided to cook ‘Beth’s amazing chocolate pudding’ instead which only takes about 15 minutes to prepare. Thankfully I had all the ingredients!


So I started making the pudding, then went to the fridge, and if by magic the mousse had gone hard and moussey! Fabulous! Now we had two desserts!

If you make this mousse I wish you luck – and let me know if it works how Nigella says it should work. I suppose I must have just not beaten the cream enough!


Also I made it with 250g of good quality dark fair-trade chocolate. Unless you are a real chocoholic I would suggest not using such strong chocolate or serving small portions – it’s very rich!

    You know, I love Nigella. Love her. I think she’s beautiful and I’d love to spend a weekend at her house with her. But I have tried several of her recipes before and none of them have turned out for me. I’m not sure what the problem is, and so it could very well be me that is the problem. But I have given up on ever being able to make one of her delicious meals.

    Even though I love her.

    I like to think that the recipe is flawed rather than it being the cook’s fault!!!!!

    The first time I read this heading I was expecting a story about a mouse that refused to jump onto a trap or something. And then when you started on about a cooking disaster with friends coming round I was thinking, mouse that popped its head out of the vegetables at just the wrong point in the meal… It wasn’t until you got to the chocolate mousse that I went back and read the title carefully!!! But I reckon my story would have been much more interesting and blog worthy.
