Happy New Year

5 Jan

I know at this time of year it is customary to write a review of the year gone previously (and yes I know I am already a couple of days late with it but I have been playing in snow and cleaning my house, get over it), but that isn’t what inspired me to want to write a blog post at the beginning of 2010.

New Year Meal

What has struck me is that a decade has elapsed since 2000. Big deal you may say – but I can remember the turn of the millennium very clearly as we had just moved house and I didn’t know anyone in my new town. A decade seems like such a long time and yet it also seems to have gone so quickly, which scares me because I feel like my life might just slip by without me noticing.

New Year Snuggling

But then I pinched myself hard and told myself to get over it – I have done tons in the last 10 years…

  • I started at a new school, got over my shyness and made lots of new friends. I wrote hundreds of assignments and essays, completed my GCSEs, my AS and A levels and was lucky enough to love going to school each day.

  • I got my first job in as a glamorous laundry washer to hundreds of Marines in training. I was the fittest I have ever been and it taught a shy teenager a lot about self confidence in the face of groups of scary men.

  • I chose to go to Aberystwyth University in 2004. I spent three years studying a course I found interesting (who couldn’t love a course in which you walk up a mountain as part of the syllabus?!) and completed a dissertation on renewable energies that stretched me hugely, but I loved every moment of it

  • While in Aberystwyth I also met many wonderful people, made hundreds of fabulous memories and I forged my way into adulthood, discovering who I really was and learning that it doesn’t really matter what other people think of you after all.

  • I met a slightly weird, sandy haired boy with an unusual passion for wildlife in a small chapel in Devon. Seven and a half years later I stood next to him in the same chapel and became his wife, and since then we have had fun riding the steep learning curve that comes with being a spouse. In between times we had a long distance relationship for two years. It was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do, but as least it showed us what we mean to each other, and that we never wanted to be apart again.

  • I’ve been to many beautiful places and taken thousands of photographs to prove it. I have seen hundreds of sunsets, laid in countless summer meadows and seen some spectacular wildlife spectacles that will remain with me for a lifetime.

Smallest sparklers in the world!

But the most important thing that I have done in the last ten years was commit my life to Christ. Over the last eight years I have learnt something of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, trusting in Him and laying down by own life in order to follow his will.

There have been many, many times in the last decade when I have felt sad, alone, disappointed and let down – but looking back none of those times sticks in my memory because I have found the hope and forgiveness that comes from following God.

I know that God has got a plan for the next decade of my life, and all the other decades besides, and I know that it will be the best, most exciting path that we can take if we are following God wholeheartedly. I am excited to be able to look back in 2020 and see what we have achieved in the next ten years.
