This is a story about my stupidity.

This is a warning to you not to do the same thing.

According to Google, only 22% of us bother to back-up our computer files annually. I’ve got to put up my hand and say that I’m not one of those. I have faithfully backed up most of my photos onto an external hard drive, but I’ve been pretty lax about backing up general files.

For some random reason we don’t have Microsoft Excel on our laptop at home, so for the last few years I’ve been carrying around our household accounts on a USB pen-drive attached to my keys.
However, the other day when I went to plug it into my work computer it just wouldn’t register, however much I wiggled it around and called it names. I took it to the computer shop and the lady told me that the inside thingymajig (I’m sure she didn’t use that word) had snapped and the information couldn’t be recovered.

I’m not telling this as a sob story to get your sympathy. I’m telling it to remind you to back up your files.

Do it

I’ve lost all our accounts from the last 4 years, our budgets, our tithes, our savings – everything. Sure, it’s all on the bank statements, but who can remember what random card entries are from years before?!

I’m going to make sure I back up my files from now on. Please do the same!

Great advice! I have been “in the process” of doing this for almost a year now. Thanks for the reminder, and I hope you are able to get everything in order again.
